March 2024 Newsletter 3rd Term

Welcome to the Lincoln Academy Newsletter!  We've started this newsletter to keep you connected with what’s happening at Lincoln.  Here’s a few of the fun things that have happened so far and how you can get involved.

Lincoln Jobs Vs Careers Theme

During this 3rd 9 weeks, our theme has been Jobs vs Careers and we've focused on what that difference is.  We want to introduce our students to careers that they might not be aware of.  We took our students to tour City Hall, the Stillwater Police Department, OSU Vet Hospital, toured the State Capitol, Meridian Technology and the Stillwater Powerplant.  Our students got to see careers that align with their interest and help them understand how important it is to have career benefits like health insurance and retirement.

Lincoln students love art, music and creating

Lincoln students LOVE ART, LOVE MUSIC and LOVE CREATING.  We are excited to offer art classes, guitar lessons and Crochet Club to our students.  In January, we started our partnership with Prairie Arts Center and our students got to make their own coffee mugs.  In February, our students got to learn color theory and practice painting using acrylic paint.  In February, we also started our guitar club and our students started taking guitar lessons.  Thanks to Mrs. Treat and Mr. Frisby for writing the SPEF grants to get these projects going.  Thanks to Mrs. Buss for starting our Crochet Club and helping our students learn to crochet.  Thank you to Walter Kelly for helping with our guitar classes and Jen Johnson at Prairie Arts for helping us start our art classes.

Lincoln Partnerships

We have so many great community partners that support our "One Student at a Time" mission.  Our Daily Bread and Simmons bank have partnered with us again to support our Marketplace and offer cooking classes to all of our students.  The Humane Society works with us in our Dogs of Lincoln program.  The Dogs of Lincoln program allows Lincoln students to train and socialize dogs from the Humane Society in hopes of getting the dogs adopted.  Turning Point Ranch continues to help our students gain confidence through equine therapy and learning how to ride horses.

Thank You to the People that Support Lincoln

Thank you to Don and Cora Lister for delivering our food boxes each week from FUMC and The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.  Thank you to Stillwater Police Officer Jeremy Hooten for always looking out for us and keeping us safe.  Thank you to State Representatives Trish Ranson and John Talley for talking to our students about our state government.

Life Skills We've Learned This Year

First Aid Kits

One of the great things about Lincoln is the emphasis we place on learning basic life skills.  So far this year, we've learned about car maintenance, house maintenance, cooking, taxes, how to fill out job applications, interviewing skills and basic first aid.  These are life skills that we will use everyday.  Thank you to Stillwater Medical Hospital for supplying our students with mini first aid kits.

Opportunities for friends to get involved

During the coming year, there will be many opportunities to get involved and support our students. Please contact the Main Office if you are interested in helping with caps and gowns for our graduating seniors, helping with art supplies or gift cards to Hobby Lobby for supplies, bicycles, musical instruments (specifically guitars), sponsoring a Students of the Month Breakfast or donating to our Friends Of Lincoln fund. Our Friends of Lincoln fund helps pay for classroom contest prizes, fun student activities and student field trips.  If you would like to get involved, please email [email protected] and follow us on Facebook or our Instagram page.
